In this blog post, I am going to review the Remee lucid dreaming mask.

The review will be a combination of my own opinion and experience, third party reviews from other authoritative websites, and customers reviews (mainly from Amazon).

However, before going through the review, let's briefly talk about lucid dreaming in general and lucid dreaming masks in particular.

What is Lucid Dreaming?

Lucid dreaming is a phenomenon in which a person becomes aware that they are dreaming while they are still in the dream state.         

This can allow you, the dreamer, to have some control over the dream, such as the ability to change the dream's plot or manipulate the environment.

What is a Lucid Dreaming Mask?

A lucid dreaming mask is a device using light cues to induce lucid dreams during REM sleep, providing dreamers with a way to master dream recall and control. 

And now, let's look at the Remee mask.

Remee Lucid Dream Mask

The Remee lucid dream mask was launched in 2012 by Bitbanger Labs through a Kickstarter campaign. The campaign was aiming to raise $35k and eventually ended up with over half a million dollars.

1. Design and Comfort

Remee is not just a regular sleep mask, that's for sure. In between the foam eye covers there is a very thin circuit board, which is Remee’s brain. This includes battery, lights, and sensors that you use to adjust its settings. 

Despite this, Remee is as comfortable and lightweight as any other regular sleep mask. This is also true even if you sleep flat on your face.

According to Dreamviews.org, the Remee mask is the most comfotable lucid dreaming mask around:

The most comfortable lucid dreaming mask will undoubtedly be the Remee, which uses a super-light-weight mask with minimal hardware and a low power profile which only needs a tiny coin-battery to keep it humming.

This is also confirmed by another reputable website, Howtolucid.com:

Not only is it lightweight and more comfortable than previous and other current lucid dreaming masks, but it’s available at an accessible price point.

Having said that, some customers mentioned that the strap needs to be tight enough in order to avoid that the mask falls off.

2. Customization

According to World-of-lucid-dreaming.com, the Remee lucid dream mask beats all other masks as far as customization goes:

There's no denying it beats all other masks at being lighter and slicker in its customization.

As a matter of fact, you can customize to your own liking a number of settings of the Remee mask, including:

• Lights (brightness, intensity and patterns)
• Initial delay
• Nap delay
• Signal interval

One thing to notice is that you don't need a cable to program the device. Everything is done through its own website, sleepwithremee.com.

3. Technology

Remee uses a timer to detect REM sleep. Five hours after being turned on, the Remee mask starts flashing its red lights.

Why five hours? Because after five hours it's very likely that the user will be in REM sleep. However, this is not true for everybody, which is why Remee allows for the customization of the Initial Delay (see point 2), which is the time it takes for the lights to start flashing.

The Initial Delay can be adjusted between 2h 30m - 7h 30m, depending on your sleep patterns.

Additionally, and for those who enter into REM sleep much faster, Remee has a Nap Delay function that can be programmed between 10m and 1h 25m.

It's also worth mentioning that the Remee mask is highly energy-efficient. This means the mask can work for about six months with just the initial coin cell battery, which is included in the package.

After that, you can easily replace the battery for about $1.

4. User-Friendly Experience

All customers and reviewers agree that going lucid takes practice, patience and a good amount of trial and error, and this is true also when using an aiding device like the Remee lucid dream mask. In the words of Howtolucid.com:

it is important to keep in mind here that lucid dreaming is not an overnight thing, and the experience differs from one individual to the next based on their level of sensitivity. So it’s important to keep that in mind in order to curb one’s expectations when purchasing any lucid dreaming aide.

While it may not be a miracle worker, the Remee Lucid Dreaming mask is a solid effort at improving the lucid dreaming mask as a product.

 5. Cost and Value

The Remee mask was originally sold at $100. It's now available from most outlets (including Amazon) at around $70, while some ecommerce shops like luciditydreammask.com have it on a limited sale for $39 (see below and bottom of the page).

The Verdict

The Remee mask ticks all the boxes for a lucid dreaming mask:

• It has a slick and slim design and it's comfortable to wear
• It allows a high degree of customization
• It has a very good technology for adjusting to your sleep pattern
• It is very easy to program

The only cons of the mask is that it doesn't auto-detect your REM sleep.

On paper, this could be problematic for some users. However, due to its high degree of customization, it only takes a bit of trial and error, like any other mask, to find the right balance.

If you are in the market for a lucid dreaming mask that is reliable, effective and that won't break the bank, the Remee mask is arguably your top choice.
